Florida Health Counts Partners With Neighborhood America to Engage Public in Health Care Initiative Web-based Public Comment® Service will serve as technology backbone to include citizen input in the development of new legislation
October 10, 2006 - Neighborhood America, the leading provider of technology solutions that manage structured audience interactions, announced today its technology will support a state-wide public involvement initiative focusing on healthcare and Florida's uninsured citizens. State Representative Holly Benson (R-Pensacola) is spearheading this initiative, known as Florida Health Counts.
Florida Health Counts (www.floridahealthcounts.org) was inspired by the "100 Innovative Ideas for Florida's Future" project launched by Florida House Speaker-designate Marco Rubio. Rep. Benson's initiative is designed to spark innovative ideas to reduce Florida's uninsured population and provide affordable healthcare and health insurance to all Floridians. The Florida Hospital Association estimates that Florida's hospitals face $2.1 billion in uncompensated care annually.
"All Floridians deserve quality healthcare, but with a rate of nearly 20%, the state's uninsured population places an ever-increasing economic burden on consumers and businesses," said Benson who serves as Chairman of the Health and Families Council. "To engage citizens and encourage them to share their thoughts and ideas to improve our health care system, we created Florida Health Counts. Working with Neighborhood America, we now have a structured, interactive Web-based forum to help us collect and manage valuable feedback from our citizens."
The Florida Health Counts Web site will help to facilitate the goal of casting a wider net for ideas about healthcare and will enable citizens to submit their thoughts and supporting documentation online. Ideas will be collected until November, at which time a follow-up meeting will be held at the North Broward Hospital District to review the innovative ideas and turn them into legislation for the 2007 Legislative Session.
"Our technology solution will allow officials to structure their engagement with concerned citizens in a way that was never before possible," said Kim Patrick Kobza, president and CEO of Neighborhood America. "Public Comment Service will create a new community engagement tool through which their opinions can be voiced and sent directly to their representatives."
